Dynamic Dredd?

After Tharg's last comments and in line with some sage advice from Dylan Teague, I revisited the 'two guns' approach for Dredd - with a healthy dose of "have you ever fired two guns whilst jumping through the air?" I think there is a distinct improvement in Dredd's 'power' and the further push on the foreshortened right hand adds more "IN YOUR FACE!" Looking at it again, I now notice the Eagle needs to be further out, to broaden Dredd's shoulders. I'll rework this a bit more, I think.

I've been working on a new website all week, as I feel that the current one isn't really reflective of what I'm doing/want to do more of.
Whilst scanning stuff for the (long overdue) sketchbook pages, I found this sketch of Dredd from a couple of weeks ago - I think it's way too static, but something made me scan it in... something about it really screamed "that's Dredd!" at me... I don't think it's representative of how I think I want my comic pages to look, I think it's more that there's something familiar about this Dredd, he looks 'bigger' somehow...
I've nearly finished building the new site, it's more of a 'refresh' than a rebrand, but hopefully it'll be ready soon and I can upload it.

Good stuff, feels like you're definitely moving forward.

Yes the sketch pose is static, but I not 'too' static. He's standing to attention, so he's going to be a little on the still side.

I like the stuff you've been producing recently. It's good to see you getting stuck into lots of anatomy. I think it's one of your strengths, but there's a Japanese word 'Kaisen' (not sure of the spelling) that means 'constant and never ending improvement', and you’ve certainly been applying it. Onwards and upwards.

I really like the looser feel of the sketch, and the Dredd pose is better than the last one but if you don't mind me saying I think it would benefit from a more exaggerated stance especially the legs I think it would make it much bolder.

Best wishes James

I like where both of these are going Kev. Much more energy in the two guns image and the static Dredd is the big man standing to attention. He's got some great bulk about him in the sketch and that's a good thing. He looks like the way Kev Walker does his solid bulk Dredd, if you get my meaning?

Seems to me that's the challenge with a character like Dredd. He's a lump of a guy with stacks of baggage...so he looks right in a a-ten-hut pose (like in your really nice 'usual suspects line up' sketch) while to animate him is the tricky bit. It's like when Dirty H. Eastwood (sounds like he should have stared in Steptoe & Son...:) used to run about the place with his hand cannon...he looked a bit 'bean pole with a howitzer'...while when he towered over the perp with a menacing, twisted lip scowl he really looked the part. That said, your 'gun over the face' pose is really working much better (especially with the shoulder revision you've got planned. Perhaps (in line with the Hot Fuzz ethos) you could tilt him a bit more counter CW. and increase the hip angle so the legs are more "K" like apart...? Very nice work sir! That A-ten-hut sketch would sell I'm sure!

Loving the new pose Kev, and that stand-at-attention Dredd has a fantastic looseness. Awesome.
