Snow Dragon - Rough!

This is something I've been playing with since yesterday afternoon. it's a bit rough at the moment but I thought I'd see if there was opinion in the blogging community...

After doing the Calvin and Hobbes 'All Grown Up' strip I was thinking about Calvin's Snowman art... would that have evolved too? Also, we had a lot of snow in the UK last week and that kind of inspired me.

I'm not sure if this is working - I like the background and might use that as a starting point for some Christmas cards.

The next step would be to get some line art in there to heighten the dragon's impact... but I might ditch the whole thing or rethink the Calvin's snowman art angle...

I like the contrast of cultures. I hope you find a happiness in this. I think it is a cool working piece. I'd keep at it... just me. -db

As I said in my email I'd maybe involve the foregound and background a bit more. ie. have the dragon coming out of the wintery forest (wrap around a trunk or branch here and there... icicles as teeth or spines possibly?). Have a quick look at Japanese woodblock prints to see their handling of snowy forests - dragons (I know you're already an expert on these :) - use of colour etc...etc... It's early days I know but it's very much the thing an xmas card would be made of!

Great start. The trees in the background have a really nice depth.

The dragon is great and I like the background too. It would be worth making the dragon stand out more though, he's quite hard to see right now but maybe that is just my computer. Maybew some little footsteps or something of his creators too. That way you could add rocks, vegetation etc to add some colour and it gives the whole picture a sense of the dragon's history. Matt's suggestion is great too. x

Great idea!!! But yes, at this point the dragon is too hard to read...as a small pic the background looks like a real photo! Hope to see this evolve even more...
